TDP terms advisory panel on security ‘extra-constitutional’

A.P. Opposition flays committee headed by YSR’s close aide

TDP: panel meant to meddle in police functioning

Left: Home Department’s functioning will be hit

HYDERABAD: The Telugu Desam Party (TDP), on Wednesday, termed the creation of an Advisory Committee on Public Security and Safety with Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy’s close aide, K.V. P. Ramachandra Rao, as chairman, “extra-constitutional” and demanded its immediate withdrawal.

Addressing a press conference, TDP leaders, Yanamala Ramakrishnudu, D. Narendra Kumar and P. Yadagiri, said the committee appeared to have been formed with the ulterior motive of keeping the entire police machinery at an individual’s beck and call, to harass the Opposition. The surprising appointment not having a precedent in any State, amounted to political interference and meddling in the day-to-day functioning of the police, besides undermining the position of P. Sabitha Indra Reddy — “the first woman Home Minister in India” — and the police force. They wondered if the Chief Minister had this plan in mind before making her the Home Minister, as she was kept in the dark and not included in the panel.

The State Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the CPI too faulted the Chief Minister for his decision saying the committee would adversely impact the functioning of the Home Department.

“Withdraw move”

CPI (M) State secretary B.V. Raghavulu and his CPI counterpart, K. Narayana, opined that the absence of the Home Minister in the panel would give scope for creation of a “parallel administration” in the department. They demanded that the government withdraw the move.
