Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University to get new campus

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University will get a new campus with Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi ordering that 15 acres near Perungudi railway station in Kancheepuram district be given to it as its present campus – Poompozhil – on 5 acres was not sufficient.

Public Works and Law Minister Durai Murugan made the announcement on Wednesday while replying to a debate on the demands for grants to the Departments of Law and Administration of Justice (Home, Prohibition and Excise).

The university was established in September 1997 to provide eminence in legal education and propagate legal knowledge. The State government sanctioned about Rs.87.9 lakh for maintenance and repair works of the hostel of the Dr. Ambedkar Government Law College, Chennai. A sum of Rs.14 lakh has been sanctioned for the purchase of books for all government law colleges.

Mr. Durai Murugan said that integrated court complexes would be built at Tiruvarur, Kulithurai (Kanyakumari district), Ranipet (Vellore), and Sankarankoil and Ambasamudram (both Tirunelveli).

Moving the demands for grants to the Law Department, the Minister said the government had issued orders for constitution of 50 Fast Track Courts at the magisterial level and steps were being taken.

Participating in the debate, S. Gunasekaran (Communist Party of India) expressed concern over an incident of break-in at the advocates’ chambers of the Madurai district court last month and wanted the government to take action against the guilty.

C. Gnanasekaran (Congress) argued for the retention of Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code as, otherwise, the State’s culture and traditions would be harmed.
