BANGALORE: Farmers and local people have encroached upon 21,098.05 acres of Amruth Mahal kaval (grazing land) at 59 locations in the State, and the Department of Animal Husbandry has asked deputy commissioners and chief executive officers of zilla panchayats to conduct survey for their early recovery. Minister for Animal Husbandry Revu Naik Belamagi told presspersons here on Wednesday that 55,293.35 acres of Amruth Mahal kaval was in the possession of the department in Chikmagalur, Chitradurga, Hassan, Tumkur, Mandya and Davangere districts. The lands were originally meant to raise Amruth Mahal breed of cattle. Now, 38 per cent of the land had been encroached upon, he said. As much as 7,706.05 acres of land in Chikmagalur, 4,140.36 acres in Chitradurga, 3,000 acres in Hassan, 30 acres in Tumkur, 5,905.11 acres in Mandya and 315.33 acres in Davangere had been encroached upon. VacanciesOf the 1,185 vacancies of veterinary doctor, only 113 had been filled. Veterinarians were not keen on joining the department as the salary was not attractive. A proposal had been sent to the Finance Department for recruitment of 400 veterinary doctors, 1,400 ‘B’ group employees and 300 veterinary inspectors, he said. To a question, Mr. Belamagi said there was no shortage of fodder for the next two months. A veterinary college would be opened in Gadag district and the land acquisition process had commenced. The Minister said there was no proposal before the Government to hike milk price.
