Karwar: Women opposing sale of arrack in Bhatkal damaged a bar on Tuesday night at Mavinakurve Bandar area. Some woman self help groups (SHG) have been opposing the sale of arrack in some parts of Bhatkal. They had given the ultimatum to the authorities to close all bars and arrack shop in these areas. On Tuesday evening, women stopped a lorry transporting liquor to a bar and destroyed the goods in the vehicle. They also threw stones at a bar in the town. The authorities assured the women that they would close the bar immediately. But on Wednesday, when the bar was opened as usual, the women gathered in front of the bar and staged a protest. When the situation went out of control, the police contacted the Deputy Commissioner and with his permission, the bar was sealed. The transporter of liquor filed a complaint alleging that his goods worth Rs. 3 lakh were destroyed by some women. The bar owner filed one more complaint stating that some women attacked his bar on Tuesday night and destroyed furniture.
