Vehicles used for sand smuggling seized

VELLORE: A total of 113 vehicles including 99 bullock carts, seven tractors, six lorries and an excavator involved in illegal quarrying and transportation of sand, were seized on Tuesday night.

Surprise mass raids carried out by nine teams comprising officials of the Revenue, Police and Mining Departments under the leadership of Collector C. Rajendran.

According to a release, the teams were formed and the raids carried out to prevent smuggling of sand following complaints from the public. Cases have been filed against persons who were involved in smuggling. Two Deputy Superintendents of Police, six Deputy Collectors, two Revenue Divisional Officers, nine tahsildars, 11 deputy tahsildars, revenue inspectors, village administrative officers and village assistants were involved in the raids.

The release said that such raids would continue.
