Kosi breach closure works complete: Bihar minister

Measures taken to prevent a repeat of the 2008 situation

Flood protection works have been successfully carried out on 144 of the 169 projects

Measures taken up for protection of the embankments of various rivers in the State

Patna: Breach closure works on river Kosi, which breached its embankment at Kusaha in Nepal causing unprecedented flood and destruction last year, were complete, Bihar Water Resources Minister Vijendra Yadav said on Wednesday.

“The Kosi breach closure works at Kusaha in Nepal are complete in keeping with the suggestions of the panel of experts from the Centre and the State,” Mr. Yadav told the State Assembly while replying to a short-notice question of RJD’s Abdul Bari Siddiqui.

The minister informed the House that the flood protection works had also been successfully carried out on 144 of the 169 projects taken after the 2008 devastating floods.

“Other 15 flood protection projects are at final stages of completion,” he said.

In reply to another question by BJP’s Chandramohan Rai, Yadav assured the members of taking all precautionary measures to prevent repeat of the 2008 like situation. He said the turbulent Kosi had breached the embankment in 2008, leaving behind a trail of devastation, because of law and order problems in the Kusaha areas in Nepal at that time.

“We are fully prepared at this stage and before monsoon to tackle the floods in Bihar this year,” Mr. Yadav said. Flood fighting force comprising experts from the state, including executive engineers of the Water Resources Department in their respective flood-prone areas, were engaged to oversee the anti-erosion works and measures taken up for protection of the embankments of various rivers in the State, he said. -- PTI
