Towards a safer future: Students participating in a quiz programme on ‘Efficient Energy Utilisation and Global Warming’ held at Holy Cross Girls Higher Secondary School in Tiruchi on Monday. TIRUCHI: Increased energy efficiency leads to better economic growth and huge amount of energy could be saved through efficient use of electricity, said F. X. Mary Magdalin Princy, Senior Manager, Technical Training and Development Centre of Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB), Tiruchi here on Tuesday. Making a presentation about the various technological improvements for promotion of energy efficiency rather than reducing energy usage at a seminar on ‘efficient energy utilisation and global warming’ organised by the Technical and Development Centre of TNEB, Tiruchi, at the Holy Cross Girls Higher Secondary School here, Ms. Princy said that the seminar would make next generation more aware regarding efficient use of energy resources. She said that it made use of energy relatively cheaper thus encouraging increased use. Consumption tipsEnergy conservation tips, the cost option for reducing the need for expensive imported power during peak hours was explained for avoiding worsening demand, supply situation and peak hour power deficit. It was explained that almost two thirds of the lighting points are fitted with incandescent lamps instead of energy efficient compact fluorescent lamps (CFL) or light emitting diode (LED) lamps. In ordinary bulbs the filament has to be heated up to produce the light output thereby, consuming more power for less light output and most of the power is converted into heat. Nearly 18 per cent of total power generated in the country is consumed by lighting sector, she said. In the follow up session, N. Gayathri, engineer, dwelt on safety, accidents and prevention. She also presented various case studies, safety slogans and demonstrated safety appliances like earth leakage circuit breakers for avoiding electrical accidents. QuizA quiz programme on energy conservation and non-conventional energy sources was conducted for the students. Nearly 600 students took part in the programme. Sr. Cyriapushpam, Headmistress of Holy Cross Girls Higher Secondary School, appreciated the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board officials for their involvement in organising this type of programmes.
