A rendezvous with French cinema

Madhur Tankha

NEW DELHI: The French Embassy and Alliance Francaise de Delhi are hosting a festival of prestigious French films at 72 Lodhi Estate here beginning this Thursday.

Titled “Rendezvous with French Cinema”, the first film to be screened at the festival will be Le role de sa vie (The Role of her Life). A freelance journalist for a fashion magazine bumps into a film star. Both of them have nothing in common – their personalities, relationships with men are diametrically opposite, not to mention their income and fame. And thereby hangs a story.

Quie m’aime me suive (If you Love me, Follow me) is about a surgeon employed at a hospital in Paris. It will be screened on July 9. Directed by Benoit Cohen, the film boasts a big star cast.

An award winner at the Locarno International Film Festival, Le deriner des fous (The Last of the Crazy) will be screened on July 16. It is about an 11-year-old boy Martin who observes his family’s disintegration. His mother lives locked-up in her room, his older brother drowns himself in drinks and his father is a mute spectator to the family’s collapse….

Philippe Faucon’s Dans la vie (Two Ladies) will be screened on July 23. Selima, a young nurse, experiences anti-Arab prejudice during her regular rounds of house calls. The film has a big cast and has also been honoured with an international award.

Winner of an award at the Cannes Film Festival, Flandres by Bruno Dumont will be shown on July 30. Demester shares his time between his farm and walks with Barbe, his childhood friend. He loves her secretly and painfully. Along with others of his age, Demester leaves to be a soldier in war in a far-off land….

Ceux Qui Restent (Those who remained) which was nominated for Cesar Awards in France will be screened on August 6. It is about Bertrand and Lorraine, who help each other to live, laugh and love again.

Honoured at the Dubai International Film Festival, Dernier Maquis is about Muslim workers who are unhappy after their boss sets up an on-site mosque and appoints an Imam for them while denying them reasonable wages. It will be shown on August 13.
