German film club in capital

Staff Reporter

Inaugural screening on Saturday

Screening at amphitheatre of Goethe Zentrum

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Goethe Zentrum here is launching a ‘German film club’ for film lovers in the city. The inaugural screening of film will take place on Saturday.

The first film to be screened will be ‘Im Juli’ (in July) directed by Fatih Akin. Dubbed as a ‘nomadic romantic comedy,’ the film revolves around a man who has never been luck in love but thinks his fortune may have changed, only to find his life becoming all the more complicated.

Daniel, the protagonist is a shy schoolteacher who is often unsure around women. But when he meets Melek, a Turkish woman, he falls head over heels in love and agrees to meet up with her in Istanbul. But en route from Hamburg, Daniel spots Juli, a woman he knows trying to hitch a ride. Daniel picks her up, seemingly oblivious to the fact that she has long carried a torch for him. When Juli discovers why Daniel is making a long trip through Central Europe, she figures this could be her last chance to win him over. Her attempts to win his affections lead to a number of arguments, reconciliations, unintended turns and brushes with the wrong side of the law. Part romantic and part road picture, the story is full of twists as it takes viewers on a journey through Europe, switching languages as from German, English, Bulgarian and Turkish. The film will be screened at the amphitheatre of Goethe Zentrum.

For membership, contact Goethe Zentrum on phone number 0471-3013018 or write to info@goethe-zentrum.org. All members will be invited for a screening on the first Saturday of every month.
