Pillai is new Home Secretary

NEW DELHI: The former Commerce Secretary, Gopal Krishna Pillai, took over as the new Home Secretary, replacing Madhukhar Gupta, whose extended tenure ended on Tuesday.

“Threats from external elements, insurgency in the northeast, naxalism and militancy in Jammu and Kashmir are among my priority areas,” he told journalists soon after taking charge.

Other challenges were providing security to all citizens and carrying out police reforms.

A 1972-batch IAS officer of Kerala cadre, he was appointed Officer on Special Duty in the Home Ministry.

Mr. Pillai had a stint in the Home Ministry earlier as a Joint Secretary. His tenure will last for two years.
