NEW DELHI: Condemning the toppling of Honduras President Manuel Zelaya by the military, Cuban Ambassador to India Miguel Angel Ramirez Ramos said on Tuesday that his country would do everything to ensure that the democratically elected president was returned to power. “He still has six months of his term to complete,” Mr. Ramos said. “There is no justification for the coup, the purpose of which is to revive from the graves the fascist regimes reminiscent of the 70s and 80s.” “The Organisation of American States, the European Union and the United Nations Secretary-General have all condemned this move by the Honduran military,” he said. “In fact, U.S. President Barack Obama too has made certain shy and timid remarks that the parties should come to the negotiating table. But even the United States has been compelled to speak up against the coup, else it may find itself isolated.” Mr. Ramos said that he expected India to express solidarity with the Latin American countries on the issue. Milena Santana-Ramirez, Ambassador of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela to India, said: “The Press has been diverting attention from the Honduras issue. It was a big event, but it received disproportionate amount of attention compared with the situation in Honduras.”
