Bill introduced
CHENNAI: The State government on Tuesday introduced a bill in the Assembly making it compulsory for all citizens to register their marriages in the wake of the Supreme Court ruling. According to the bill, the apex court had observed that “the effect of non-registration would be that the presumption which is available from the registration of marriage would be denied to a person whose marriage is not registered.”
The bill said “The Supreme Court is of the view that marriages of all persons who are the citizens of India and belong to various religions should be compulsorily registered in the respective States, where the marriage is solemnised.” — Special Correspondent
