TIRUCHI: Professional acumen of high and higher secondary school teachers in the district will be enhanced through in-service training during July.

The objective of the day-long training for all subjects throughout the month is to improve the overall pass percentage of the district in Plus Two. Though less by half a per cent compared to last year, the district could register 90.5 per cent, about seven per cent more than the State average in Plus Two.

The mandate of each of the 172 higher secondary schools in the district should be to score above the district average, Chief Educational Officer K. Swaminathan told a gathering of about 700 Plus Two teachers who were invited to receive certificates for achieving cent per cent results in their respective subjects at the E.R. Higher Secondary School on Tuesday.

Acknowledging disappointment over not being able to enhance the pass percentage to 96 per cent, the CEO said the training and the steps taken for distribution of materials for slow learners before the quarterly examinations were directed at achieving the target this year. Mr. Swaminathan also emphasised that at the juncture wherein Government schools were competing with aided / private schools, achievement of cent per cent results by the government was imperative.

The CEO advised teachers to prepare lists of potential achievers and average students based on the mid-term tests during July and to devise strategies for the progress of both categories. His advice to headmasters was to prominently display the first three rank holders on the notice boards after each examination in the school.

It will serve as a motivation to the students to keep improving their performances. The specialised coaching for potential State-level achievers through result-oriented teachers would also be initiated earlier this year, he said. Cooperation of parents in making slow-learners familiar with one-mark questions at home, exposure to question papers of previous years, and testing competencies necessarily through writing were among the strategies suggested by some teachers on the occasion.
