Scheme to improve police-public relationship activated

Coimbatore: Under the concept of providing the First Information Report (FIR) either on-the-spot or at the door step, the Coimbatore Range police have so far issued 5,605 FIRs.

Deputy Inspector General of Police, Coimbatore Range, P. Sivanandi, said that in Coimbatore Range, a scheme had been instituted to foster better relationship between the police and the public.

In a bid to reduce complaints of ‘burking’, the police introduced a system of providing a copy of the FIR to the complainant either on-the-spot or at police stations.

This was first introduced in October 28, 2008 and owing to election work it was slowed down for some time and has been activated again.

In Coimbatore district 2,139 FIRs were issued, 2,295 in Erode, 644 in Nilgiris and 527 in Tirupur district till date.

In Udumalpet district alone of the 779 cases reported, FIRs have been given in 608 cases thus accounting for 78 per cent.

In case of any problem in acceptance of complaints or in issue of FIR, people could approach the Inspector, then the Deputy Superintendent of Police and then the Superintendent of Police.

If their grievance was not resolved, they could seek help from the Office of the Deputy Inspector General of Police.
