Merger of schools to be reviewed

Staff Reporter

CHENNAI: Mayor M. Subramanian on Tuesday said that the Corporation would review its decision to merge nearly 30 schools.

Speaking on a Call Attention Motion at the Council meeting, he said only those schools that had less than 50 students and located within 500 m of another Corporation school with higher classes would be merged.

The merger was brought about for administrative reasons. “There are schools with just eight students and those had to be merged with schools with higher classes. This move would only provide better facilities for the students,” he said. Cutting across party lines, Councillors said that in the interest of the students, schools must not be shut down.
