CHENNAI: Students who benefit from charitable schemes must repay society by helping others, Anna University Vice-Chancellor P. Mannar Jawahar said here on Tuesday.

Distributing free books to college students at a function organised by Jaigopal Garodia Charitable Book Bank, he said it is important for students to gain knowledge and skill, and have a positive attitude to achieve success in life. Teachers and parents play a pivotal role in moulding children as good citizens.

He underscored the significance of hard work, honesty, integrity and involvement for the students to succeed in their endeavours. Dr. Jawahar advised them to develop an optimistic attitude, concentration and willingness to grab the opportunities for a successful career.

Dr. Jawahar presented Jaigopal Garodia Award of Excellence to V. Neeraja, a student of Sri Sai Ram Engineering College and one of the beneficiaries of the Book Bank, for securing first rank in Anna University. The award comprised a citation, cash prize of Rs.10,000 and a gold medal.

Trustee of Jaigopal Garodia Vivekananda Vidyalaya Trust, Ashok Kedia, said the book bank was established in 2000 and nearly 34,000 students from various colleges have benefited so far. The trust had spent nearly Rs.70 lakh towards the purchase of books. The book bank facility would soon be extended to students in Bangalore, he said. The Book Bank’s co-ordinator K.S. Kesavan said around 29,000 books in 608 titles were available with the bank. At least 6,500 students would benefit from the scheme this year. The only condition for distribution of books is that students must return the textbooks after their examination.

Jaigopal Garodia Vivekananda Vidyalaya’s principal G. Vijayakumar, and the school vice-principal Sukhanya Bhaskaran participated.
