STRIDENT DEMAND: AIADMK MLAs outside the Assembly in Chennai on Tuesday. CHENNAI: AIADMK members were evicted from the Assembly on Tuesday after they defied the Chair and raised slogans in support of Sri Lankan Tamils. Soon after question hour, the AIADMK MLAs, led by O. Panneerselvam, demanded a discussion on the issue. Speaker R. Avudaiyappan told them he was taking up for discussion the issues raised by MLAs of the AIADMK and other parties. But they continued to raise slogans, prompting Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi to describe it as an “uncivilised act.” The Speaker ordered the watch and ward staff to evict the AIADMK MLAs. Outside the House, AIADMK member and former Minister D. Jayakumar said his party wanted the Assembly to adopt a resolution seeking action against the Sri Lankan government. Sri Lanka should be taken to the International Court of Justice for killing thousands of innocent Tamils. In the House, the eviction continued to remain a subject of debate. Mr. Avudaiyappan said the AIADMK members were just raising slogans. When PMK leader G.K. Mani tried to raise an issue, the Speaker denied permission, noting that he had already been informed of the decision not to take it up for discussion. Mr. Mani said his party was staging a walkout as he was not being allowed to raise the issue.
