Tiwary to play for Kalighat

KOLKATA: Bengal batsman Manoj Tiwary, who stood down as Mohun Bagan captain in the last two matches of the season-ending P. Sen memorial Trophy, has decided to join Kalighat Club next season.

He and Kalighat signed a contract to this effect on Monday. Tiwary will formally sign for the club during the inter-club transfers beginning on September 1.

Tiwary said, “I thoroughly enjoyed my two-year stint with Mohun Bagan, but it is time to move on. Kalighat has given me a better deal so I preferred to join it.”

While many anticipated him to join East Bengal, the mercurial batsmen sprang a surprise by opting for Kalighat which won almost all the tournaments in the last two seasons. And it was Bagan which broke Kalighat’s winning sequence in the P. Sen Trophy.

Tiwary’s decision meant he would play along with Bengal captain Laxmi Ratan Shukla and possibly under him in the coming season.

When queried, Tiwary said he doesn’t have a problem playing under Shukla. “In fact, I am looking forward to playing along with him,” he said. — Special Correspondent
