SINGAPORE: India made a resounding start in the inaugural Asian Youth Games, clinching a gold and silver on the first day of the competition here on Tuesday. Arjun won the discus, while Rahul Kumar bagged a silver in 1,500m. The 18-year-old Arjun’s effort of 58.72m on his fifth and final attempt helped him win the gold. Akiba Kenta (51.84m) of Japan finished second and Kazakhstan’s Milovatsky Yevgeniv (51.73) third. Rahul clocked 4:05.01 to finish second behind Layah Waleed Saleh Ali of Yemen, who clocked 4:00.91. Iran’s Beyranvand Amir was third with a timing of 4:05.32. India is being represented by 48 athletes in seven disciplines — athletics, swimming, diving, shooting, table tennis, beach volleyball, and basketball. — PTI
