dated July 1, 1959: Nepal’s new era

At the break of dawn on June 30, Nepal’s first ever Constitution automatically came into force. The Constitution was promulgated by King Mahendra on February 12. On the 17th of this month he proclaimed that it would automatically come into force with effect from June 30. With the inauguration of the Constitution, Nepal shook off everything old that was inconsistent with the new fundamental law of the land that makes the kingdom a full-fledged democracy.
