Police raid illicit liquor unit
Staff Reporter
DINDIGUL: A special team of Prohibition Enforcement Wing police seized 280 litres of spirit mixed with illicit Indian Made Foreign Liquor worth Rs.1 lakh, raw materials, manual cap sealing machines, two bags of caps and bundles of labels during a surprise raid in a house at Rajalakshmi Nagar situated on the outskirts here on Tuesday.
M. Karunakaran, (43) native of Nellore near Pattiveeranpatti, was arrested in this connection. A car and a motorcycle were seized from him. Led by Deputy Superintendent of Police M. Annam, the team, found 11 plastic containers used for manufacturing illicit rum hidden in an under ground drinking water tank before the house. Bundles of fake labels of three major liquor manufacturers, 25 numbers of 180 ml bottles with illicit rum and 200 empty 180 ml glass containers were also recovered from the house.
Talking to press persons after inspecting the seized materials, Superintendent of Police R. Chinnsamy said the PEW police strongly suspected that there was a group behind it. Initial investigations revealed that two persons – Ragu and Sakthi – used to visit this house from Pondicherry to assist the accused in filling illicit liquor in bottles.
Acting on a tip off, the special team raided the house, he added. “Similar raid would continue and stern action to be initiated against persons who engaged in such anti-social activities.”
