When they went for swimming

TAMBARAM: Two boys, aged 11 and 9, drowned when they went swimming in the Narayanapuram Lake in Pallikaranai on Sunday.

Pallikaranai police gave the names of the deceased as K. Sivasankar (11) of Sathya Nagar, a student of class VI at the Government Higher Secondary School in Kovilambakkam, and S. Haridas (9) of Rajeswari Nagar in Kovilambakkam, a class IV student at the Panchayat Union Middle School near his house.

The two boys had left home around noon on Sunday, informing their parents that they were going to play cricket. However, they did not return till late in the evening, causing panic among their parents and relatives who began to search for them. Meanwhile, Sivasankaran was found lying unconscious on the lake’s edge and was rushed by residents to a hospital nearby, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The body of Haridas was found floating in the lake on Monday morning. Police said the boys had reportedly ventured deep into the lake only to be trapped in the slush at the lake bed. Several hundred can be seen frolicking in the waters of many lakes in the southern suburbs of Chennai.
