More than 140 minimally invasive brain and spine surgeries have been performed with a success rate of 98.4% in the last ONE YEAR at the Hannah Joseph Hospital, Madurai – A superspeciality hospital for Neurosurgery. These surgeries use “Key-Hole” technique combining advanced technology and digitized gadgets. The minimally invasive surgery uses the combination of Neurosurgical Microscope, the Neuro-Endoscope, the computer guided neuro – navigation system for Stereotaxy, high speed micro- drills and microsurgical instrumentation. These are aided by the Anesthesia workstation which monitors the patient’s vital parameters so as to provide safe anesthesia for patients who are undergoing operations in the brain and spine. The array of equipments help in reducing the time required for operation, reduce extensive tissue dissection, minimize scar and blood loss. Since the blood loss is minimal, blood transfusion is not required for most of the brain and spine surgeries done at our centre. While some tumours and blood clots in the brain need the use of only the Neurosurgical Microscope, others may need the microscope together with the Neuro Endoscope to perform surgeries. In certain cases, we may need the computer guided stereotactic navigation to reach the site of the operation. Craniotomes and Microdrills ensure speed and safety in minimally invasive surgeries. The combination of these advanced techniques help in reducing the duration of the surgery, thereby reducing the hospital stay and cost of treatment for the patient. Glioma, meningioma, pituitary adenoma, craniopharyngioma, tuberculoma, brain cyst (deep seated), intraventricular tumour and schwanoma are some examples of brain lesions where this technology can be adapted.
