Scrap circular: Siddaramaiah

Special Correspondent

BANGALORE: Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Assembly Siddaramaiah on Tuesday lashed out at the Government for issuing a circular on June 26 to department heads and deputy commissioners directing them to refrain from attending meetings called by leaders of the Opposition in the State Legislature.

He termed the move “anti-democratic”, and demanded that the circular be withdrawn failing which the issue would be raised in the Legislature session commencing on July 9.

Mr. Siddaramaiah said in parliamentary democracy, Leader of the Opposition was the “shadow Chief Minister” and by issuing the circular, the Government had “insulted” the institution of Leader of the Opposition.

Taking exception to BJP MP for Bangalore North D.B. Chandre Gowda’s remark that the Opposition leaders did not have the right to convene meetings of officials, he said Mr. Gowda, who was the Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly, had insulted the parliamentary democracy and the leader of the opposition office by making such a remark.
