Rs. 286 cr. distributed to agricultural labourers

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: A sum of Rs. 286 crore has been distributed to around 3.98 lakh members of the Tamil Nadu Agricultural Labourers Welfare Board as relief or financial assistance, Revenue and Housing Minister I. Periasamy told the Assembly on Tuesday.

About 1.7 crore members were registered with the Board and 74.95 lakh family identity cards distributed to the members of the scheme for farmers and agricultural labourers.

The Minister was concluding a debate on the demands for grants to the Revenue, Housing and Prisons (Home, Prohibition and Excise) departments.

Under the scheme for distribution of two acres waste land to families of landless poor agriculturists, he said lands were distributed in seven phases.

A total of about 1.75 lakh beneficiaries had been covered and around 2.10 lakh acres were distributed. Referring to a query of S. Rajasekaran (Communist Party of India) on the relief amount provided by the Centre following Cyclone Nisha lashing parts of the State in November last, Mr. Periasamy said that while the Centre sanctioned Rs. 570.17 crore, the State government incurred an expenditure of about Rs. 1,060 crore.

In the last three years, about 6.7 lakh house site pattas were issued, of which 2.1 lakh were given under the special scheme of regularisation, he said.
