“I feel justice has been rendered to me after many years”
R. Ramrajan CHENNAI: He was Superintendent of Police in the morning and retired as Inspector General of Police in the evening. Officials in the Police Department say this is something unprecedented. While the official never served as a DIG, his tenure as IGP was perhaps the shortest ever. R. Ramrajan, a senior IPS officer, was given a double promotion by the State government on Tuesday. Hours after taking charge as Inspector General of Police (Home Guards), he retired from service. The Group-I officer who was recruited as Deputy Superintendent of Police in 1983, was conferred IPS in 1994. Following an order of the Madras High Court upholding the judgment of the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) quashing a charge memo against the official, the government issued orders effecting the double promotion. Though promoted as Deputy Inspector General of Police, Mr. Ramrajan never served in that post. He directly wore the uniform of an IGP and drove in a car that had two stars in the front signifying his rank. “I was given the promotion order by the Additional Director General of Police Bholanath at the DGP’s office at around 1.30 p.m. on Tuesday. I feel justice has been rendered to me after many years. I am retiring from service with full contentment,” Mr. Ramrajan said. Without serving a charge memo the authorities concerned delayed the promotion. Due to lawyers’ agitation, Mr. Ramrajan said he presented his case in the CAT that delivered a landmark judgment, he added.
