Chiru prefers ‘rising sun’ or ‘umbrella’

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: Praja Rajyam has narrowed down the choice of its election symbol to the ‘rising sun’ or the ‘umbrella’, party president K. Chiranjeevi announced here on Tuesday.

This follows a communication from the Election Commission (EC) asking the party to take its pick from out of the free symbols. After firming up its choice, the PRP would convey its decision to the EC in a few days, Mr. Chiranjeevi stated at a press conference.

More care

The adverse experience with the rail engine, he said, had made the party take more care in choosing the symbol. The Praja Rajyam had suffered in the recent general elections because the rail engine was found smudged on the electronic voting machines and resembled a roadroller, confusing many a voter. “So the search for a confusion-free symbol is taking time,” he added.

Recalling Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s proposed visit to the Tirupati sometime in July, he said he had written a letter welcoming him, in his capacity as the local MLA. He had drawn Dr. Singh’s attention to the need for developing Tirupati, given the fact that Tirumala was only second in the world after Vatican City in attracting pilgrims.

Letter to PM

Mr. Chiranjeevi said he had written another letter to the Prime Minister urging him to resolve the problem created by the Babli project across the Godavari in neighbouring Maharashtra. The project threatened to turn seven districts of Telangana into a desert by cutting inflows into the Sriramsagar reservoir. With the Congress party being at the helm at the Centre and in Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra, there was need for the government to prove its sincerity in solving the issue amicably, he added.
