Deputy commissioners may get more powers

‘More powers for DCs will help speed up development’

Ministers says many people have favoured this

Bangalore: The Government is thinking of giving more powers to the deputy commissioners to enable them to have better control over all taluk officials and monitor development works, said Labour Minister B.N. Bacche Gowda.

Speaking on the sidelines of a review meeting of the Bangalore Rural Zilla Panchayat, the Minister said that they would have a say in recognising inefficient officials and recommending their transfers. This opinion was expressed by secretaries and ministers during the “Chintan-Manthan” consultation meeting held recently by Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa.

“With several departments now coming under zilla panchayats, the powers of deputy commissioners are reduced considerably,” he said. Giving them greater powers would speed up development work.

Mr. Gowda said that additional funds of Rs. 10 crore for districts and Rs. 5 crore for city municipalities would be given annually to take up works such as slum development, drainage maintenance and so on.

At the review meeting, Mr. Gowda, who is the minister in-charge of Bangalore Rural, said prevalence of dengue and chikungunya in the district was worrying.

He said that fogging machines would be employed at all 98 gram panchayats to keep mosquito menace under control and do extensive spraying.

Garbage dumping

Mr. Gowda expressed concern over garbage from BBMP limits being dumped in taluks of Bangalore Rural district.

He said that truckloads of garbage were being dumped at night and there were agents who provided space for dumping for a commission.

He said he had asked the police to take action against anyone indulging in such activity.
