In custody: The seized lorry detained at the Mudliarpet police station in Puducherry. — PUDUCHERRY: The police seized a tanker lorry carrying 12,000 litres of rectified spirit, possibly for the clandestine use of the liquor industry, and arrested four persons on Monday night. A team from the Mudliarpet police station, while conducting vehicle checks near the Karamanikuppam railway gate, spotted the tanker with Gujarat registration. The driver, Rajiv Patel, when questioned, claimed that it contained chemicals, police said. The team spotted a car parked a few metres away. When they approached the vehicle the occupants tried to speed away and were stopped, the police said. According to the police, one of the occupants, Simon, was involved in spirit smuggling in the past. Interrogation revealed that spirit was concealed in secret chambers of the lorry. The seized spirit was worth around Rs. 10 lakh, police said. Cases were registered under several sections of Pondicherry Excise Act and the accused were handed over to the Excise Department.
