KRISHNAGIRI: Children from a backward area of Krishnagiri district were reportedly taken to Sillangulam in Tuticorin offering free education and were ill-treated. Parents brought back eleven students recently. Those returned were: A. Palaniammal, Standard IX, her younger brother Sivakumar Standard II, N. Mahalakshmi, Standard IX, and her brother N. Sundararajan, Standard V, N. Jothi, Plus-One (she has scored 344/500 in SSLC) her sister N. Muthulakshmi, Standard VIII all from Sivalingapuram village; N. Sangeetha, Standard VIII, A. Anandhi Standard VIII, S. Muniyan Standard VI, M. Manimekalai, Standard VIII, and K.Siva, Standard IX, all from Ethakinaru village.A total of 98 children from Sesurajapuram and Anchetti were taken in a bus to Sillangulam school recently.

These students were studying in Garetti Panchayat Union Middle School and Ethakinaru Panchayat Union Primary School. Some of them have rejoined the school.

Girl students complained that they were asked to work on the agriculture lands owned by the education trust, which is 2 km to 4 km away from the school.

K. Siva from Ethakinaru village was beaten up using plastic pipes and some other students were kicked by teachers with shoes. Siva sustained injuries in his right knee.

Girl students told that there is no sanitation facility, drinking water or proper rooms in the school. Girl students were asked to take bath openly.

“We welcome the initiative of the education trust to provide free education. But at the same time they should provide minimum facilities to students” says A. Mangamma, who has two children.

She said she took Rs. 3,000 loan from villagers to admit her children in school on June 8. She also worked in the kitchen. She said she had returned as she couldn’t bear the unclean environment. She got the Transfer Certificate for her children without paying any fee and also got Rs. 360 for her services in the kitchen.

But the school management insisted the parents of other children pay Rs. 500 for issuance of TC, it was alleged.

When contacted N. Thavasiraj, a secondary grade teacher from MKN Educational Trust told The Hindu that the school was run by the trust for poor children. Around 4,000 poor children from all over the state were studying in the school.

There were 200 teachers. The school provided free education out of the income from the farm lands owned by the trust. Karuppasamy is looking after the management of the school. He said more than 300 children were taken to Sillangulam from Krishnagiri and Dharmapuri districts this year.

He refuted the charges that the students were ill-treated and beaten up by teachers. Mr. Karuppasamy couldn’t be contacted.

C.M. Perumal, Block Co-coordinator, UNICEF, admitted N. Jothy in Plus-One at Anchetti Government Higher Secondary school on Tuesday.
