Two chain-snatching incidents in Karur

L. Renganathan

Tough time for Karur police as crime graph soars

KARUR: Two chain-snatching incidents were reported in Karur town on Tuesday and police suspect that a particular duo could have committed the crimes, as the modus operandi seemed to be similar.

Police said that P. Malarvizhi was walking along the Nanjaiyar Koil Street when two youths riding a motorbike came from behind and tried to snatch the gold thali weighing seven sovereigns from her. She successfully resisted their attempts to snatch away the chain but one youth got off the bike and brandished a knife threatening Malarvizhi who then had to part with her thali at knifepoint. The young persons sped away in their motorbike.

In another incident J. Padma (40) of Anna Nagar was walking along the road in her street when probably the same duo came in a bike and snatched away the gold chain worn by her. Police suspect that the same duo that had threatened Malarvizhi could have committed both the crimes, taking note of the similarity of circumstances.

The two incidents within a day and that too in the heart of the Karur town made the police press the panic button and scramble for responses. Superintendent of Police R. Dhinakaran visited the Karur Town police station and held enquiries with the police officials about the situation and the progress they had made on apprehending the duo of chain snatchers.

Slipping away from secure hands

Coming on top of the two daylight robberies in Gandhigram area of Karur town a few days back, the crime situation in Karur town and district seems to be slowly slipping away from secure hands. Though the police have mounted vigil there is hardly any let up in the crimes.

The daring robberies sought to remind the police that all is not well as it seems to be on the crime front especially in residential areas such as Gandhigram. The Gandhigram robberies were well planned, laid out and executed to methodical perfection when the couple, both government servants, were away at work and the house was left uncared for. The miscreants had gained entry through the backdoor in those cases.

And in Tuesday’s incidents it is chilling for the police to know that the modus operandi of chain snatching was a pointer to dangerous potent and points to worsening of the crime situation in the district. That the youth who snatched away the thali of Malarvizhi did so at knifepoint has made the police sit up review the crime situation in the town.

A couple of murders in the past month and few road accidents made it a worse month for the police in Karur district.
