DSS stages protest seeking caste-based quota for women

‘SCs, STs, backward communities should get the facility’

Memorandum given to Deputy Commissioner

Karwar: Members of the Dalit Sangharsh Samiti (DSS) staged a protest in front of the office of the Deputy Commissioner here on Tuesday.

They were demanding caste-based reservation for women belonging to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes and backward communities in the Legislative Assembly and in Parliament.

Addressing the protesters, Shyam Kumar Gokarn, president of the Karwar unit of the DSS, said that reservation for women belonging to the oppressed classes is a long standing one.

He said that the DSS with help of progressive organisations had staged protests all over the State seeking fulfilment of the demand. He urged political parties to support the demand for reservation within reservation for women from the oppressed classes.

Kolasirsi Kannesh, a backward class leader, said political parties such as the BJP, the Congress and the Communist parties, which were dominated by upper caste leaders, were trying to stall the demand of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes and backward communities for reservation within reservation for women in elected bodies.

He said these parties shed crocodile tears for the oppressed classes and had now ganged up against their demand for reservation.

He said many backward class leaders in the Lok Sabha had raised their voice in favour of reservation within reservation for women on caste basis.

He warned that those political parties that opposed reservation for women from the oppressed classes would face the wrath of the people.

The protesters then handed over a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner urging the Government to fulfil their demands.
