Rivulet as road: Rain lashes Dindigul on Tuesday.

THENI: Minor showers in several parts of Cumbum valley, particularly between Goodalur and Chinnamanur and in the catchments of Periyar dam including Thekkadi keep the hopes of farmers in the district alive. Rainfall recorded in Periyar dam and Thekkadi was 7.8 mm and 8 mm respectively on Tuesday.

Expecting good rains this season, several farmers in the valley have started preparing the field to raise the first crop.

Already, Public Works Engineers have released 220 cusecs of water from Periyar dam for meeting drinking water needs to several villages, town panchayats and municipalities.

With good flow in Mullai Periyar River, illegal tapping was in full swing. Despite caution from Public Works Department engineers, several farmers have raised nurseries for the first crop in the double cropping area, utilising water released from the dam for drinking water purpose.

Local bodies sunk over 45 wells on the river bed to supply drinking water to people in villages and town panchayats and municipalities. On an average, they utilise around 50 cusecs only. Vaigai dam had received just 87 cusecs on Tuesday. Rest of the water discharged from Periyar dam was illegally tapped by farmers who have lands on both sides of the Mullai Periyar River.

They have been using oil pumps at night to pump large quantum of water to protect long-term and perennial crops, besides raising nurseries.

Already, PWD officials warned that farmers who raised nurseries might incur huge loss if there was any delay in the onset of monsoon. With the existing storage of 109.6 feet in Periyar dam, release of water for irrigation was very remote.

The dam and its catchments have started receiving minor showers for the past two days only.

But inflow into the dam was slashed sharply to 48 cusecs within 24 hours when compared to 119 cusecs on Monday, he added. Water level stood at 24.8 feet in Vaigai dam. The discharge was 41 cusecs only.
