The birth of a healthy baby is a dream of everyone, it is a joyful and thrilling experience. The mere thought of becoming parents is the most amazing adventure and has a profound impact on the rest of the individuals life. To achieve a healthy baby the mother must maintain holistic good health right from the date of conception or even before, till the delivery of the child. As for as the dietery requirement is concerned it should be a balanced diet with correct proportion of carbohydrates fat proteins and minerals, iron and calcium requirements are raised. So it is advised to take iron and calcium tablets from 5th month of pregnancy. The weight gain of mother during pregnancy is 10 to 12 kg. Mental and emotional health are very important like physical health. She should have calm and happy thoughts and avoid stress, sorrow, anger and frustration. Prenatal depression will lead to miscarriage and congenital developmental defect in the baby. Skin care is essential. Physiological charages in the skin like striagravidarum linea alba and prurities (itching) will be there. As pregnancy is immuno supressed state fungal infection of the skin and vagina are common, Dental hygeine is very important and she should have a regular dental check up. Proper Antenatal check up every month till 28wks, every fortnight till 36wks, and every week till delivery. This is for low risk pregnancy. In case of high risk pregnancy, Diabeties, Hypertension, heart disease, complicating the frequency of check up should be more. Self medication is dangerous through out pregnancy. Exercise: Sedentary life and improper diet regime leads obesity and post dated pregnancy which leads to complication. To overcome this proper antenatal exercises regular walking and yoga are needed. Minimal investigations like 1)blood counts,bl grouping analysis, screening for infection and 2) ultra sound (scan) to find out the normal growth of the baby, and to rule out any developmental defects are also important.
