Tamizhmamani, Puduvai Kalaimamani awards given away in Puducherry

Award ceremony coincides with birthday celebrations of Bharathidasan

Rs.18 lakh set apart every year to recognise and honour artistic talent


PUDUCHERRY: Puducherry Chief Minister V. Vaithilingam gave away the ‘Tamizhmamani’ and ‘Puduvai Kalaimamani’ awards for the years 2006 and 2007 for contribution to Tamil literature and arts respectively.

Cash award, gold coin

The four ‘Tamizhmamani’ awardees received a cash award of Rs.30,000 and a three-sovereign gold coin each, and the 34 recipients of the ‘Puduvai Kalaimamani’ award received a cash award of Rs.20,000 and a two-sovereign gold coin each.

Poetry gathering

The award ceremony coincided with the birthday celebrations of the great poet Bharathidasan.

Coordinator of the Sahitya Akademi Tamil Advisory Committee ‘Sirpi’ Balasubramanian delivered a talk, and a poetry gathering was held, chaired by poet Bharathidasan’s son Mannar Mannan.

Public Works Minister M.O.H.F. Shahjahan, who also holds the art and culture portfolio, was also present.

Instituted in 1999 and 1997

The ‘Tamizhmamani’ awards were instituted by the Department of Art and Culture in the year 1999, and the ‘Puduvai Kalaimamani’ awards, in 1997.

Other awards

Director of the Department of Art and Culture S. Bhanumathy said the department set apart Rs.18 lakh every year to recognise and honour artistic talent.

The department also gave away the ‘Tholkappiyar’ award for the best piece of Tamil literature and the ‘Kamban Pugazh’ award for writers of children’s books every year.
