ICRISAT plan to tide over monsoon delay
Special Correspondent
HYDERABAD: The International Crop Research Institute for Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) has recommended a four-pronged strategy to tackle problems caused by delayed monsoon or climatic changes.
The institute said in a press release on Tuesday that vast rain-fed areas in the State were critically deficient in micro-and secondary nutrients, improvements in which would increase crop yields by 30-70 per cent.
It recommended use of drought-tolerant and climate change-ready crops that match the available length of growing season and low soil moisture.
The institute favours short-duration crops which mature before soil moisture gets depleted.
It wants stakeholders empowered through capacity-building enabling rural infrastructure and formulation of policies supportive of dry-land agriculture.
