COIMBATORE: District Collector P. Umanath inaugurated The Hindu’s Newspaper in Education (NIE) programme for the academic year 2009-2010 at the National Model Matriculation Higher Secondary School here on Tuesday.

The programme, which is into the fifth year here, covers about 200 schools and, on an average, 30,000 copies are given to 380 schools. The NIE helps in developing various skills of the students.

Speaking at the inaugural, Dr. Umanath recollected his school days when books were given to the students to read during general knowledge classes and he would wonder why newspapers were not given. Though there were several media for information flow now, content and utility of newspapers was better, he noted.

“Students should develop the culture of reading newspaper from an early age,” he said.

The NIE programme helped in developing the non-academic skills of students such as language and communication.

Teachers and students should make the best use of it, he said. The District Collector was welcomed with a Bharatanatiyam performance by the school students.

In his welcome address, Chief of Bureau of The Hindu, Coimbatore, G. Satyamurty, said the NIE programme was on in Coimbatore for the last five years. It was like a corporate social responsibility where the newspaper was given at Rs. 1.50 a copy. The paper organised painting and quiz contests also for the children annually and through these programmes promoted the talents of students.

Uma Mohan, Joint Secretary of the school, said The Hindu played an important role in shaping the young minds.

The NIE programme had inculcated the habit of reading the newspaper effectively and enriched the language and skills of the students needed for day-to-day life. B. Logesh, a Standard IX student and Sneha, a Standard X student of the school, spoke about the benefits of the NIE programme. It developed multifarious skills such as team spirit, self-confidence and critical thinking.

D. Raj Kumar, Regional General Manager of The Hindu, proposed a vote of thanks. Correspondent of the National Model School P.N. Palanisamy was also present.
