Retired Army man arrested

Staff Reporter

He was wanted in a land-grabbing case in the Capital

NEW DELHI: A 43-year-old retired Army man wanted in a case registered under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act has been arrested by the Special Cell of the Delhi police. He carried a reward of Rs.25,000 on his head.

Narender Bhati is allegedly a member of a land-grabbing syndicate operating in Outer Delhi. According to the police, the gang members are involved in several criminal cases in the Capital and Uttar Pradesh.

Narender was booked under MCOCA along with his accomplices in a case registered at the Swaroop Nagar police station last year. He was also declared a proclaimed offender in that case. Acting on a tip-off that he had been hiding at Loni in UP, the Special Cell sleuths zeroed in on him and arrested him on Sunday.

The police said Narender’s two accomplices Jagbir and Jaipal are presently lodged in jail in the same case. Jagbir was arrested by the Special Cell in May.

During interrogation, Narender purportedly disclosed that he took voluntary retirement from the Army in 2001 and started living with his family at Gopalpur here. Jagbir, who had a criminal past and was from Narender’s native place, organised a land-grabbing gang in Delhi and also roped in Narender.

The accused grabbed land mostly in Swaroop Nagar. Narender’s job was allegedly to create terror among the local residents, for which he also used his licensed rifle. The weapon was seized by the Samaipur Badli police after he was allegedly found involved in a fight over a property at Kadi Vihar.

Gang members

According to the police, the gang members used to prepare forged documents of plots in their names and then capture the properties. They would then extort money from the real owners for vacating the plots. About 10 cases of cheating forgery, criminal trespass and land grabbing have been registered against the gang members at the Samaipur Badli, Jehangirpuri and Swaroop Nagar police stations in the past decade.

Based on these findings, the police invoked MCOCA against Narender, Jagbir and Jaipal and 18 others.
