SRINAGAR: Condemning the police firing in Baramullah in which two people lost their lives, the Hurriyat Conference (Geelani) has called for a three-day general strike, beginning on Tuesday to protest against the “government’s callousness and insensitive approach to dealing with the situation.” A spokesman of the Hurriyat said, “The government has failed to solve the Shopian rape and murder case and now innocent people are fired upon by [the] police. So there is no other way but to protest by observing strike for three days and afternoon protests on Friday.” PDP slams police actionOpposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) condemned the police action. “The reign of terror unleashed by the government on peaceful citizens, reflects the fascist mindset of the ruling coalition led by the National Conference,” PDP general secretary Dillawar Mir said in a statement. He expressed concern over the continuous loss of life, property and assault on the dignity of the people. “In six months of its rule, the Omar Abdullah government has brought the State face to face with a new crisis.” The government, instead of directing its guns on the people, should improve its own functioning and ensure that the guardians of life and property did not turn into the enemy of people, he said.
