A liberal voice is no more

Writer B.S. Venkatalakshmi died on Friday


Bangalore: B.S. Venkatalakshmi, (63), journalist, writer, liberal thinker in Kannada and English, passed away after a cardiac arrest on Friday at her residence in Bangalore. A postgraduate in journalism from Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, she served in the State Department of Information and Publicity for 15 years.

After opting for voluntary retirement, she was running a monthly mini magazine in Kannada called “Charchegondu Chavadi” for the last nine years from her residence.

She was a well known columnist and feature writer with major Kannada and English newspapers, publications and magazines and has written several articles for The Hindu. “Patniyaru Kandantha Prasiddharu” was her monthly column in the magazine Mayura in which she interviewed wives of achievers from all walks of life. Her autobiographic column in Hi Bangalore was well received.

She has published four books, including the first biography of Hindustani music maestro Mallikarjun Mansur.

She won the Karnataka State Sahitya Academy Award for her book Baduku - Bhavane - Bharavase. She is a recipient of Aryabhata award also.

She was a connoisseur of both Carnatic and Hindustani classical music and was a regular theatre critic. She is survived by H.N. Shama Rao, her husband, and a big network of relatives, friends and admirers.

She donated her eyes to Lion’s Eye Bank and her body to St. John’s Medical College for research purposes.
