MANGALORE: Mangalore University has initiated a departmental inquiry against English lecturer at the University College Pattabhirama Somayaji for allegedly “hurting the Hindu sentiments” by condemning the pub attacks that took place in January. Vice-Chancellor of the university K.M. Kaveriappa told The Hindu that a notice had been served on Mr. Somayaji asking him to justify his acts and to represent himself before the committee, if willing. In January, students of the University College had complained with the university that Mr. Somayaji had hurt the Hindu sentiments while speaking to the media on the college campus after the pub attack in January. Mr. Somayaji had been given a week’s time to justify himself in writing. “If you fail to do so, the university will be forced to take an unilateral decision in the matter,” the notice served by the university read.
