VIJAYAWADA: Local MP Lagadapati Rajagopal on Monday handed over a cheque for Rs. 25 lakhs to the Andhra Loyola College Alumni Association (ALCAA) for the construction of a school on the ALC campus. The MP had promised to contribute the sum for the construction of school building for children of the poorest of the poor from slum habitations, during the golden jubilee celebrations of the ALC. Addressing a meeting organised on the occasion, the MP walked down the memory lane and said he was just eight when he first entered the portals of the Loyola Institution. “Whenever I think of my alma mater, I am overwhelmed with a sense of gratitude to the institution that has groomed me into a rounded personality,” he said. The MP said he had been interacting with schoolchildren for the last five years. “I have visited slum habitations and seen the impoverished lives led by the poor and the needy. The proposal put forth by the ALCAA to build a school for the children of these poor families was a laudable gesture. I am sure the school will become a destination for grooming children into responsible citizens,” he said. ALCAA director A. Theckemury said he was moved by the plight of children who came from economically backward sections and had no ray of hope for a better future. “In order to give them a better life, we put forth the school proposal which received good response from the ALCAA members,” he said. Tracing out the origin of the ALCAA, he explained the purpose of the association’s existence. ALCAA president G.V. Mohan Prasad said the MP had paved the way for fulfilment of a five-year-old dream. He said his compassionate gesture would inspire others for benevolence. College Rector Fr. Stanley, former lecturer M.C. Das and others were present.
