INSPIRING: Executive Director of BHEL A .V. Krishnan addressing ’The Hindu Newspaper in Education’ launch at BHEL Matriculation Higher Secondary school in Tiruchi on Monday. TIRUCHI: Reading is the best habit any one can pick up. Reading helps one to concentrate well and enlarge thoughts, the Executive Director of Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), Tiruchi, A.V. Krishnan said on Monday. Living in a fast-paced technological world with several distractions, it was essential for students to devote at least one hour on extra-reading to develop knowledge. Awareness through seeing is different from awareness through reading. The former reaches the mind and the latter the consciousness, Mr. Krishnan said speaking at the inauguration of ‘The Hindu - Newspaper in Education’ for this academic year at the BHEL Matriculation Higher Secondary School. There has to be a motivation for extra-reading. Schools could allot time every day for reading and speaking exercises, he suggested. Developing reading habit at the school-level will stand the students in good stead when they pursue higher education. Mere memorisation and reproduction will not be of use at a later stage, he cautioned, explaining that to understand and learn a concept, a lot of reading was required. Mr. Krishnan assured to provide good books in the forms of CDs and hard copies to libraries of schools in the campus. Mr, Krishnan honoured prize-winners of quiz competition the school had conducted at the start of this academic year based on newspaper reading during the vacation, in the presence of School Principal Juliet Newman, Principal of R.S.K. Higher Secondary School P. Varadarajan, General Manager - HR, T. Anandan, and other senior officials. The first prize was received by S. Bavithra of standard X, second by R. Gideon of standard IX and third by V. Janaat of standard X. R. Srinivasan, Regional General Manager, ‘The Hindu’, Tiruchi, said that NIE was designed scientifically to improve the students’ listening, speaking and reading abilities, and their critical thinking. Exposure of students to contemporary issues through NIE sessions equips them with the skills and attitude to become leaders and problem-solvers, he said. NIE Coordinator Radhika Vijay said that the schedule for this year would commence on July 1.
