CHENNAI: The 100 million litres a day (MLD) Minjur desalination plant will be commissioned by October, Deputy Chief Minister M.K. Stalin told the Assembly on Monday.

Wrapping up the debate on the demands for grants to the departments of Municipal Administration-Water Supply, Rural Development-Panchayat Raj, he acknowledged that there was a delay in the completion of the project. While Chennai Metrowater had carried out its part of the work, the private promoter had executed 95 per cent of the work.

On the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission, he said Metrowater was engaged in the implementation of 28 projects to improve the water supply and sewerage system at a cost of Rs.2,032 crore. Six of the projects were within the limits of the Chennai Municipal Corporation and 22 in local bodies around the city. The approval of the Pollution Control Board was awaited for the setting up of integrated solid waste management facilities in Kodungaiyur and Perungudi.

A project for the construction of micro and macro drains, at a cost of about Rs.1,448 crore, had been drawn up. The share of the Chennai Corporation was Rs. 815 crore. It would be executed in phases over three years.
