Semester system: statements sought High Court round-up

Kochi: The Kerala High Court, on Monday, directed the State government and the universities in the State to file statements in response to a writ petition challenging the choice-based credit-and- semester system introduced for degree courses.

A Division Bench, comprising Chief Justice S.R. Bannurmath and Justice Kurian Joseph, issued the directive when the petition filed by the Council of Principals of Colleges in Kerala came up for hearing.

According to the petition, the principals of colleges under the universities had not been consulted before introducing the system. The teachers do not have clarity about the curriculum. Various teaching and non-teaching posts in colleges are vacant and unless these are filled, the system will be ineffective..

Election challenged

The election of M.K. Raghavan from the Kozhikode Lok Sabha constituency was challenged in the court. In his petition, Mohammed Riyaz, who contested the seat as the CPI(M) candidate, alleged that his rival had resorted to corrupt practices and published pamphlets containing false allegations against him.

Auction irregularities

Justice Thottathil B. Radhakrishnan directed the District Collector, Ernakulam, to file a detailed statement on revenue offices that had auctioned off land under revenue recovery proceedings at prices lower than what were due.

The court directed the State government to look into the Vigilance report on the auction of a piece of land at Rayamangalam in Perumbavoor and apprise the court of the action taken.

Sex racket case

Initiating suo motu proceedings on the basis of a television news report, Justice Radhakrishnan directed the City Police Commissioner, Ernakulam, to file an action-taken report in connection with human trafficking involving girls in the city.

The channel had reported about sex rackets involving young girls and boys in the city.
