ON THE WARPATH: Junior lecturers form a human chain in Guntur on Monday.

GUNTUR: Junior college lecturers under the aegis of ‘Inter Vidya-Parirakshana Samithi’ on Monday formed a human chain to intensify their protest against the State government’s proposal to merge Inter education with the secondary school education.

The lecturers, led by MLC and honorary president of the samithi K.S. Lakshmana Rao, formed the human chain at the Naaz Centre in the city and later held a protest meeting in front of the office of the Regional Inspecting Officer, Intermediate Board.

Addressing the lecturers, Mr. Lakshmana Rao said that the proposed merger would impact the basic set-up and service regulations of the board and could bring down the standard of Intermediate education. The Intermediate education, which was introduced in 1969 based on the recommendations of Kothari Commission, had been functioning under the control of Andhra Pradesh State Council of Higher Education.

High standards

He said the standards of Intermediate education were very high enabling several students of the State to secure seats in prestigious engineering and medical colleges. The proposed merger would mean that the students would not have the freedom to choose optional subjects in higher classes and instead forced to study all subjects in the 10+2 stream. They might have to cope with different teaching methodologies.

This could lead to discrepancies in the service matters, he added. Government Junior Lecturers’ Association, Guntur district unit, president S. Peri Reddy said that with the proposed merger the chances of junior lecturers getting promoted to degree college lecturers would totally diminish.

Samithi State unit leaders M.V Gona Reddy, former mayor Ch. Yesuratnam and other leaders were present.
