Vijayawada
TDP wanted scrapping of VLT, while CPI and CPI (M) wanted exemption to small plot owners VIJAYAWADA: The Vacant Land Tax (VLT) issue came for discussion in the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) general body meeting on Monday. The opposition parties – CPI, CPI (M) and TDP – expressed the view that the VLT that was being levied on vacant lands in the city was proving to be burdensome to the poor and the middle class. Seeking immediate redress of the lacunae in the laid down procedures and rules to ease the burden on the people, they demanded exclusion of the plots admeasuring less than 300 sq.yards from the levy of VLT. Mayor M.V. Ratna Bindu tried to convince them that the matter was under active consideration and a decision would be taken soon. But, the TDP floor leader Y. Ramana wanted scrapping of the VLT immediately, while the CPI and the CPI (M) floor leaders, D. Sankar and Ch. Babu Rao, respectively, wanted exemption to small plot owners. As the discussion showed no signs of ending with the ruling Congress sticking to its stance that scrapping of the VLT was not possible, the CPI (M) corporator D. Kasinath suggested a way out. He said since a resolution to exempt plots up to 300 sq. yards of area was already passed in the earlier general body meeting, there was no need to pass a proposal to scrap the VLT. The suggestion was incorporated and adopted.
