PRP activists stage dharna

ELURU: Demolition of a shopping complex by the Municipal Corporation of Eluru (MCE) as part of road widening at Tangellamudi on the city outskirts took a political twist on Monday with a protest staged by the PRP.

The PRP activists staged a dharna at the II-Town police station under the leadership of its district president K.P.N. Satyaprasad alleging that the demolition was a part of harassment by the city MLA Alla Kalikrishna Srinivas (Nani) of the Congress. He accused the MLA of instigating the MCE authorities and police to demolish the building owned by the PRP activist and Tangellamudi gram sarpanch Meka Ramachandra Rao. The PRP leader charged that the MLA had nursed grudge against Mr. Ramachandra Rao, who was his one-time associate, for working against the Congress in the recent elections. As the building was constructed by reportedly obstructing the passage of a drainage channel encroaching upon the road margins, the MCE has deployed its demolition squads to pull it down. Mr. Nani however denied his role in the building demolition while regretting over politicisation of the issue by the PRP. He said the MCE had resorted to the demolition only in line with the court orders.
