Children at relief camp miss school on day one

Ch. Santakar

KORAPUT: School was not opened on Monday for Nikunj Turuk, student of Class V from Podapadar village in Narayanpatna block of Koraput district, even though children all across the district had entered their classrooms after an extended summer vacation on Monday. He along with many other children has been kept in Debighat UP School near Koraput. This is the place where they had to lead the life of a refugee along with their parents for the last one month after their parents had to flee from Narayanpatna block following violence. Children had to stay away from attending classes even though they were staying in a school, Bendri Mahanandia, elderly women in the relief camp at Debighat UP School, said.

Girls like Anjana Turuk, Dharitri Khora, Kajal Mahanandia and Aruna Khosla, all of whom were promoted to Std. IX in their village school would now be added to the list of drop out children.. While Nikunj refuses to go back to his home in Podapadar fearing more violence, people at Debighat have declined to allow them and their family members to stay anymore inside the classrooms of the school that was meant for the studies of their children.
