Pay property tax online from July 1

BANGALORE: Come July 1, and filing property taxes will go online. After a collection of Rs. 730 crore of property taxes for 2008-2009, the online system is set to help the palike boost revenue.

The process created in collaboration with National Informatics Centre, is simple. Logging onto the website of the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) — www.bbmponline.org — will lead taxpayers to the property tax link. Feeding the application number in the appropriate column will give one the details of his previous year’s property tax. “This is a sustained effort by BBMP to give taxpayers what they deserve,” said U.A. Vasanth Rao, BBMP Deputy Commissioner (Resources). Payment by credit or debit card — Visa or Mastercard — has been made free. “This facility may be the first in the country,” said Mr. Rao. Those who wish to pay by cheque can fill the application online, download it, and submit it to the BBMP Help Centre concerned along with their cheque. In case of payment by credit card, the acknowledgement can be downloaded, while BBMP will send a hard copy of the acknowledgement, along with an SMS alert. The website provides details of the list of taxpayers for the period 2008-2009, and the list of those who have not paid in the same period.
